OMRON Europe achieves IEC 62443-4-1 certification
OMRON Europe BV is proud to announce that its Research and Development Department has successfully obtained the IEC 62443-4-1 product security development life-cycle requirements certification. This certification, awarded by the globally recognized TÜV Rheinland, marks a significant milestone in OMRON’s commitment to cybersecurity in the industrial automation sector.
Following the certification of OMRON’s Controller Division in Japan last year, this achievement by the OMRON Europe BV R&D department highlights the company’s dedication to ensuring secure and reliable product development processes worldwide. The IEC 62443-4-1 certification is part of the IEC 62443 standards series, focusing on the secure development lifecycle of industrial automation and control systems. It addresses all aspects from security requirements definition, design, and implementation to verification, validation, management, and product end-of-life processes. Achieving this certification demonstrates OMRON’s ability to support its customers and partners, and to develop products that meet rigorous security standards, ensuring resilience against current and future vulnerabilities.
During the preparation for the certification audit, OMRON was supported by Decoy Technologies, whose expertise was helpful in refining OMRON’s procedures and templates. Wendy Tonks, Lead Test Engineer and R&D Cyber Security Specialist at OMRON Europe stated, “We have found the assistance and support from the team at Decoy Technologies to be integral to our successful achievement of the IEC 62443-4-1 certification. Their advice and improvement suggestions during the preparation phase guaranteed that our audit went smoothly, ensuring we achieved our target maturity level with minimum rework and clarification.”
There are two key efforts currently driving cybersecurity in the European Union. The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), a legislative proposal by the European Union, applies to digital products, ensuring they remain secure throughout their lifecycle. The NIS2 (Network and Information Security Directive 2), is a directive of the European Union to improve the cybersecurity capabilities across the EU by setting higher standards for critical sectors and ensuring that businesses are better prepared to address cyber threats.
Tonks concludes: “We are focused on developing secure products, and with this certification and our ongoing preparations for NIS2 and the Cyber Resilience Act, customers can rely on our dedication to cybersecurity. We've seen growing interest and inquiries from our customers, and we're ready to discuss detailed CRA-related topics with our machine builder partners.”
